Knowledge Is Key In Advancing Your Purpose

knowledge

To know wisdom and instruction,
To perceive the words of understanding,
To receive the instruction of wisdom,
Justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:1-7

What you know determines where you go in life. Knowledge is the elevator that brings you to the next level of fulfilling your purpose. Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Sometimes we acquire more knowledge but don’t put it into practice. Knowledge without application is useless.

There is general knowledge that virtually all of us obtain. Things such as how to read, write and add. But think about what type of knowledge you have personally gravitated towards. What came naturally to you? What did you understand quickly that everyone else had difficulty grasping? What do you know and wonder why no one else seems to know?

We can think about the process of obtaining and utilizing knowledge in three phases. First is the knowledge phase. This is where you acquire the facts or the information. Second, is the understanding phase where you make sure you comprehend the knowledge you’ve gained. Third is the wisdom phase where you apply that knowledge. From this it should be obvious that you can’t apply knowledge that you’ve never received. More knowledge leads to more wisdom. And a wise person will know how best to go about fulfilling their purpose in life.

KNOWLEDGE OF SOURCE

The root of every issue is separation from Creator. The prophet Isaiah records the words of the Lord in Isaiah 46:10 saying, “Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure.’” The way that God works is that He sees the end from the beginning and then starts building. Our connection to the Creator will give us the knowledge of what He had in mind when creating us.

He is our source, not just for life but also everything that comes with that. If you don’t know where you come from you will have difficulty knowing who you are or where you’re going. Far too many people attempt to go through life relying solely on their finite knowledge without ever seeking knowledge from the source of all knowledge.

KNOWLEDGE OF SELF

Toure Roberts that said, “Identity allows you to identify what is not you. Because knowing what is not you is just as important as knowing what is you.” Not knowing who you are will cause you to live a lie. Theologian G.K. Chesterton said, “Do not free a camel of the burden of his hump; you may be freeing him from being a camel.” Until you know yourself you will do your best attempt to live like someone else. Also, your identity is not your purpose but your purpose will be filtered through your identity. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” That means that we have been created to create. The Creator created us to create.

This is why you feel fulfilled when you complete an assignment or build a team or an organization. This is why the accomplishment you feel inside when you see your vision become a reality cannot be compared to simply being given a sum of money. He created you for “good works prepared beforehand,” which means He saw your purpose before He saw you. Once you discover your “it” you will feel closer to your Creator than ever before. In order to discover your “it” or your purpose, you will need to identify your specific uniqueness. The most important homework assignment you can ever do is on yourself.

KNOWLEDGE OF SERVICE

Your purpose lies in the answer to three central questions: What were you born to serve to the world? What were you birthed to birth? What were you created to create? Whether I’m watching TV or engaged in conversation, I will invariably hear a line that gives me an idea for a blog post or a lesson I will teach. My brain is hardwired to create (in that way) at all times.

You and I can be in the same room, watching the same movie, sitting in roughly the same spot and still hear and process the movie differently. The reason for this is that we each hear through a filter that aligns with what we were put on earth to complete. My spiritual assignment came with spiritual ears, as did yours. Therefore, my perspective in what to do with the information that we both heard will be different – not better, just different. Therein lies the beauty of God’s design. We are physically designed with many similarities but spiritually designed with different propensities.

This allows progress to take place on earth because you can see what I can’t see. If, with a pure heart, everyone covers the blind spots of others, we all win. In this way, two perspectives can be better than one. And in this way we can multiply and maximize each other’s knowledge for the benefit of the world.
