That Level Of Precision Can’t Be A Mistake

While abroad in London one evening, I was watching TV and, being unfamiliar with British television programming, I didn’t find much to watch. I ended up watching a dart throwing competition expecting it to put me to sleep. I don’t know if it was the enthusiasm of the commentator or the competitors themselves, but soon I became engrossed in what I was watching. These weren’t your average drunk guys at a bar throwing darts. They had skills and precision! Routinely they would land the dart on the number they needed to win or tie the score. And every so often someone landed a bull’s-eye.

When we see such levels of precision, our first thought is not ‘that was an accident.’ This is especially true when we see repeatedly precise acts or events. At that point, we understand that such levels of precision can’t be accidental, random or without forethought.

The discovery of the great galaxy seeds in the radiation afterglow showed that the expansion of the universe was precisely designed to cause just enough matter to congregate in order to allow galaxy formation but yet not enough to cause the universe to collapse on itself. That means whomever or whatever caused the universe to exist knew the precise rate at which to expand the universe so that there could even be a universe.

To take it one step further, if the universe expanded at a rate 1 millionth more slowly, expansion would have stopped and the universe would have collapsed before any stars had formed. If it went faster, no galaxies would have formed. That level of precision can’t be a mistake.

It doesn’t seem like random forces in the universe could make such a targeted decision. Just like the darts didn’t randomly fly to the correct places on the dartboard, a mind was involved in the process. It seems contradictory to assume that cosmic level precision is not the result of a cosmic level mind.

The cause that produced such a precisely designed universe must be the result of an intelligent and intentional mind. And if that be the case, then that mind would also exhibit the same level of precision in the intent for designing you, me and every other person that lives, has lived or will ever live.

PRECISION ON THE PLANET

Scientists have found that there are numerous constants (unchanging and necessary factors) that exist on planet Earth in order for life to exist as we know it. For example, the oxygen level in the atmosphere is 21%. If it were 15%, humans would suffocate due to lack of oxygen. Yet at 25%, there would be daily spontaneous fires. Precision, in every aspect of life is indicative of purpose.

The carbon-dioxide levels on the planet are precise as well. If the CO2 level was higher, there would be a runaway greenhouse effect and, more than likely, we would all burn to the death. If the CO2 levels were lower, we would all suffocate because the symbiotic relationship between vegetation and animals would be disrupted. They wouldn’t be able to maintain proper photosynthesis and, thereby, would not produce the oxygen necessary for humans to live.

These are just two of many examples of precise life sustaining factors present on Earth. The precision seems obvious but the larger question is – why was this planet so perfectly designed for us? Could it be that a Creator wanted to create an environment where we would have the opportunity to thrive in our purpose in a way that exemplifies and glorifies His essence, nature and character?

PRECISION IN YOUR PURPOSE

When you are fulfilling your purpose are you taking precise and targeted actions or just throwing things against the wall to see what sticks? Those darters, dart-throwers or dartletes, depending on your vernacular, probably practiced for years to get skilled enough to be able to hit the target they aimed at with regularity.

How much time and energy have you put into improving your level of precision in whatever you are doing in life? Advertisers have figured out how to target their marketing efforts in order to reach the people most likely to buy their products. Who is your intended audience? Who were you designed to be a blessing to? What group or individual should your purpose be directed to towards?

When I think of the fine-tuning of the universe, the intentionality of God is evident. He is purposeful. How could He be any less purposeful regarding your life or mine? Your purpose in life should be targeted and assessed based on the attributes, abilities and aptitude that the ultimate giver of purpose has placed in you. You owe it to yourself and your Creator to be precise in your delivery of purpose to the world.
